What is an Estimated Difference?

In mathematics, there are two types of differences – actual difference and estimated difference. When we want the exact difference of two numbers, then we use the actual difference approach to calculate the difference.

But in many cases, we want approx answers rather than an exact answer. In the estimated difference, the Minuend and Subtrahend are first rounded to their nearest tens or hundred places, then we subtract these two rounded numbers to get an approximate answer. This approximate difference is called the estimated difference.

For example, if you want to subtract 37 from 15, then

Actual Difference = 37 – 15 = 22

Estimated Difference = 37 – 15 => 40 – 20 (After Rounding) => 20.

Therefore, the actual difference is 22 and the estimated difference is 20.

How to Calculate the Estimated Difference?

To calculate the estimated difference between two numbers, follow these steps:

  1. First round the Minuend and Subtrahend to the nearest tens.
  2. Now, subtract the rounded numbers.
  3. The result obtained is the estimated difference.

Example 1: Estimate the difference between 47 and 28.

First, we will round both numbers to their nearest tens. After rounding off, we get:

First Number = 50

Second Number = 30

Now, Estimated Difference = First Number – Second Number = 50 – 30 = 20.

Therefore, the actual difference is 19 and the estimated difference is 20.
